Mayu consults her Pokedex. Commonplace, but tenacious and known to employ pack tactics even in the wild; the evolved form is often an apex predator in local food chains. Enough potential to be worth testing, at any rate. She sends forth her Riolu and orders a pre-emptive strike.

The Poochyena is much smaller than it first appeared once you get closer. Seems this one must be very young still. It is sent sprawling by the unexpected Quick Attack, though it manages to right itself. It then...attempts to flee. Poochyena are not very brave.
(Poochyena starts out right next to Alpha, then using Run Away it Sprints 8 meters towards the tree line.)

For all her slight frame, Mayu has a pretty good throwing arm. She moves after it and tries again.

Good. Poochyena is no great prize, but it would be... irksome... for the first Pokemon she set her sights on to escape. Mayu continues along the path, now on the lookout for both trainers and Pokemon to test herself against.

Good. Wretched little thing. Mayu leaves it by the side of the road; perhaps it will learn a lesson about not running over passers-by in future. Or perhaps not. Just so long as it doesn't try it with her again.
She makes her way towards Viridian, walking stiffly. This is really very annoying; she makes a note to keep a wider array of restoratives on hand in future.

Thankfully, the paralysis wears off a few minutes later. Most people give Mayu a wide berth.
Mayu meets a Hiker on the road. They say they are headed for the nearby Dark Cave to go spelunking. They could use a quick warm-up though, so they'd like to battle. 1v1
